Welcome to the New Wraeclast

Path of Exile 2 is finally here, and while the core DNA of the original is intact, almost everything old has been torn down and rebuilt. Combat is methodical, dodging is mandatory, and the Atlas is now a brutal, evolving death gauntlet. Whether you’re a returning exile or a fresh-faced wanderer, these 10 tips will save you from an embarrassing obituary on the beach.

1. Forgot Everything You Know About Flasks

Flasks no longer refill on killing monsters. That beloved safety net is gone. Instead, you start with a single Life Flask with limited charges. You recharge it by killing a handful of enemies per zone, but you can’t just spam it. Use it sparingly, and upgrade it at NPCs as soon as possible. And remember: you can’t chug 5 flasks in one second anymore—each acts on its own cooldown when you’re in a pinch.

2. Master the Dodge Roll

If you don’t learn to time your dodge roll, you’ll die. A lot. The roll grants brief invulnerability frames, which you’ll need for crossing telegraphed ground slams, flaming projectiles, and enemy charges. You can roll out of mid-animation—it’s your panic button. But mind the stamina: rolling costs a chunk of your stamina bar, so you can’t just roll forever. Save it for big attacks, and you’ll glide through boss fights.

3. Socket Everything, Upgrade Everything

Skills now come from Skill Gems you slot directly into your weapon or armour, and supports attach to those gems. You’ll want to check every drop for better sockets—and upgrade your gems at NPCs using crafting currency. Don’t hoard orbs early on; use transmutation orbs on your gear to get resistances and life. The early game is a resource poor but the barter system wants you to spend. If you fall behind on gear, a boss will one-shot you.

4. Follow the Corpse Trail

Every zone is now littered with optional permanent upgrades that appear on a map as small sparkles. Picking up these “Remnants” boosts your stats (like +20 max life or +5 to all elemental resistances) for the rest of the campaign. Get them all. They absolutely stack and turn a difficult Act from nightmarish to just brutal. Leave no corner unexplored.

5. Resist the Urge to Yolo-Boss

Boss fights in PoE 2 are more than DPS checks. They’re arena-based puzzles. Each boss telegraphs a wide AOE tells, and most have a terrifying enrage phase under 30% HP. Before fighting a boss, ensure your resistances are at 50% (especially the second boss in Act 1 who pukes cold damage). If you die twice in a row, leave the zone, level up twice, and revisit.

6. Your First Ascendancy is a Power Spike

As you progress, you’ll unlock the Labyrinth and your first Ascendancy. This is non-negotiable if you want to survive Act 3. Choose a specialization that complements your build (e.g., a Ranger picking Pathfinder or Deadeye). The passive points are huge—think of them as a free 4-5 skill points and a unique mechanics bonus.

7. Support Gems: Don't Just Stack DPS

While the game pushes you to put a raw damage support on your main skill, you also need utility supports. A Fortify or Lasting Shield on a defensive skill can keep you alive. Also, try linking your travel skill like Dash with a cooldown reduction support—you’ll feel so much smoother. Experiment in your hideout, and don’t be afraid to unsocket and re-slot gems for free.

8. Harness Spirit and Reserved Skills

New to PoE 2 is a Spirit resource (different from Mana). Some skills, like Auras and permanent summons, reserve a portion of Spirit. Early on, you might find a Spirit shrine that gives you +30 Spirit. Use it to slot a cheap aura like Clearing Presence or play a minion build—it’s basically a free, permanent buff. Remember: you can adjust these in the skill menu at any time.

9. Use the Barter System

The old trade experience in Act 1 is replaced by NPC merchants who trade specific items for Barter tokens you find in the world. Don’t ignore these—some offer unique skill gems early that aren’t dropped anywhere else. Also, every NPC has limited inventory that resets on level-up, so check back often.

10. Expect Early Access Jank

This is Early Access. You will see pathfinding bugs, texture pop-in, and the occasional unpickable corpse that leaves you staring at a wall. If a skill feels underpowered, it might be a balance issue—check the forums later. But above all, report bugs. The community and devs are actively fixing daily, so you’re helping shape a better game.

The First Step Is the Hardest

You will die, you will lose experience, and you will rage quit. Then you’ll reroll a new class and smile. That’s the Wraeclast way. Stick with these tips, take your time, and soon you’ll be hoarding Orbs and planning your endgame with the best of them.
